Published on December 7, 2011 by in Android

Google has said that a billion apps are now being downloaded every single month and that the download rate is still accelerating.

Google claims state that the first 1 billion app installs took nearly 20 months from the Android Market and then the second billion took five months, the third billion took just 2 months, and so on. There is now more than half a million Android phones activated worldwide every day.

Google has since put more effort into apps and downloads by adding extra’s like movie rentals and redesigning the Android Market to better rival Apple’s App Store. The Apple App store has amassed 18 billion downloads in the three years that it has been open, and in the App Store’s first two years it was already up to 5 billion downloads. Google is advancing so quick due to a large number of manufacturers now using its open-source Android operating system..

Google will also make a number of apps available for 10p for 10 days. The company said “Starting today for the next 10 days, we’ll have a new set of awesome apps available each day for only 10 pence each. Today, we are starting with Asphalt 6 HD, Endomondo Sports Tracker Pro, Fieldrunners HD, Great Little War Game, Minecraft, Paper Camera, Sketchbook Mobile, Soundhound Infinity and Swiftkey X.”
